The rendering of the patina is both sober and spectacular. And the method, relatively easy. Overview of techniques and first steps in the company of decorator Anne Andrieu. Interview by Gilles Wallon Why skate a piece of furniture or a wall? The answer is in the appellation: the idea is to rediscover the patina of time. This makes it possible to harmonize its furniture and bring out its particularities, to accentuate the reliefs and the materials. We can thus highlight the irregularities of a wooden piece of furniture, thus giving it the charm of yesteryear. With the patina, the furniture rediscovers its history, it becomes one with it. It also allows you to renovate a chipped paint. All types of surfaces are weathering: walls, plaster, wood ... Skating an entire wall in an old house is a very good idea! How to skate its walls? First step: remove all the protective layers from the surface to be skated, to work on a clean and healthy whole. You can sand with sandpaper or use a stripper. Then apply an undercoat paint, then repaint the chosen color with an acrylic paint. Then simply sand the surface with a brush or abrasive paper, emphasizing the places that are naturally worn or to which you want to give this impression. Instead of sanding, it is possible to apply a non-toxic oil wax, or an oil or water glaze. Glazes are made from linseed oil and turpentine, but can be purchased in stores. The waxes and glazes will bring out the irregularities on the surface. Then remove the excess wax with a cloth. You will get different effects depending on the amount of wax you remove. The necessary materials: stripper, sandpaper, brushes, undercoat paint and acrylic paint, waxes or glazes, sandpaper. What are the pitfalls to avoid ? It is a time-consuming operation. Allow two hours of preparation, two hours of printing, two hours of patina. It is very important to respect the drying times! The furniture thus worked can last for years. Should we limit the patina to certain pieces of furniture? In absolute terms, you can skate anything. But the principle is to create a harmonious whole: applying this treatment to modern furniture, or design furniture, does not make sense. Pick up an old piece of furniture and skate it: you will give it a new youth and a unique style. Ideal for your campaign decor, for example.
