The history of the incandescent lamp
Who really invented the incandescent lamp ? Difficult to answer.
One of the pioneers is Heinrich Goebel who built a carbon filament bulb to illuminate his watch store in 1854. This German-American engineer had noticed that the carbonization of bamboo fibers gave an electrically conductive filament and that 'It was possible to make it incandescent under vacuum. However, his invention failed to interest industrialists.
In England, researcher Josef Wilson Swan is also working on the creation of this bulb. He presented the results of his experiments in 1879 without taking the precaution of filing a patent. Six months later, in the United States, Thomas Edison announces the development ofan incombustible lamp able to function for long months without deteriorating, process for which he has patented. This first incandescent lamp lasts 40 hours.
The United States is enthusiastic. It was soon over with the smelly and dangerous gas or petroleum lighting that had replaced tallow candles and wax candles a century earlier. This first lamp called "carbon filament" is quickly perfected to be mass produced and have a longer life.
In 1881, Lamb's Hotel in Scotland was one of the first hotels in Europe to be fitted with electric lighting. The same year, the first public electricity company in the world was created, south of London. It installs the first street lighting.
In 1898, the German Hermann Walther Nernst invents an electric lamp with a metallic filament. This lamp, which succeeds lamps with a carbon filament, is a precursor incandescent bulbs current. Other engineers try their hand at improvements.
In 1902, Werner Von Bolton succeeded in manufacturing a tantalum filament which offered a yield 5 times higher than the carbon filament lamp. In 1904, the Austrian Alexander Justt agglomerated the tungsten powder to make a filament that could be brought to very high temperatures without destroying it quickly. In 1908, William D. Coolidge developed a process for spinning tungsten at high temperature which made the filament even more resistant. Gradually, the power and the lifespan of the bulbs improved.
What is the difference between an incandescent lamp and an LED bulb?
On the DIY store shelves, you have no doubt noticed that there are different types of light bulbs. But do you really know their characteristics?
The incandescent lamp (or incandescent light bulb) consists of a glass bulb containing a filling gas. The filament, connected to the electrical connections, is brought to high temperature by the passage of electric current and thus emits light.
The LED bulb contains an optoelectronic component which emits light when it is traversed by electric current. An LED bulb does not have a filament, but it is made up of different layers of semiconductor materials such as aluminum nitride and gallium phosphide.
Incandescent bulbs are mainly reserved for domestic use, indoors. They produce a very warm white light, 2700K. It has a rather short lifespan and needs to be changed regularly, especially if it is installed on regularly used lighting. Incandescent lamps are however appreciated by the amateurs of decoration. In an industrial spirit, opt for fairly large bulbs with visible filaments, to highlight a lamp.
The lifespan of an LED bulb is much longer, which makes it an ecological lighting recommended for a long use, at private individuals or in business. Count between 35,000 and 50,000 hours of lighting before having to change your LED bulb. It is also easier to choose the color range or intensity of lighting of an LED bulb.
You just have to choose the type of bulb according to the desired use!
